Of all the changes Assassin's Creed Origins has brought to the formula, the smartest could be the post-launch addition of a Discovery Tour mode. The series has always been strongly rooted, but the fantastic – Leonardo Da Vinci's propensity to make assassin tools and the like – has often overshadowed Ubisoft 's dedication to its historical research. Discovery Tour shed light on all the work the studio has put into researching ancient Egypt, and a year later, Assassin's Creed Odyssey seems to deserve the same attention.
Consumer and fashionable, it seemed period-appropriate and detailed right down to the string used to tie armor or braids. The architecture has been magnificently recreated to show what the ornate structures of ancient Greece would have looked like minus the 2,000 years of wear and tear still standing. The characters refer to the gods with an accuracy that represents a person who sees it as religion, not religion.
Of course, ancient Greek culture has no shortage of pop culture representation. From the 300's to Disney's Hercules and even the God of War series, Greece is better represented than ever before. But just because society is entangled in modern myths, it looks like a more respectful and rigorous approach will be taken.
Just like the first, it would act as an advertisement for Ubisoft . As with any studio commentary, it offers a layer of mystery and secrecy around the development process, providing insight and context to the hard work of making a game. And the studio portrays this as something well-intentioned and passionate.
This is already a work to be done for Odyssey . But it's a different possibility that the cost of Discovery Mode is too high for a free value-add feature to justify making it again and again this year, and that would be a shame. To showcase both its educational value and impressive work of Ubisoft 's historical research, Discovery Tour has to stay.
