King Æthelwulf 's youngest son, King Alfred of Wessex , is known as 'Alfred the Great' in his legendary will to unite the islands under one flag. In 868 AD Alfred undertook to invade Danish Vikings from the neighboring Kingdom of Mercia , with his first key mission supporting his brother Æthelred, the ruler of Wessex. This attempt was unsuccessful at first. The brothers were forced to defend their homeland against the seemingly unstoppable Great Heathen Army .
After a grueling series of bloody battles, Alfred led Wessex to victory at the Battle of Ashdown in 871 . His Vikings attacked a fierce hillside. He laid the first foundations for his reputation as the decisive leader. The Anglo-Saxons were being squeezed by Wessex despite Alfred's victory at Ashdown.
Alfred had no choice but to retreat to the testing ground of the Somerset Levels, where he waged guerrilla warfare against his enemies. Using mobile armies in the Danes style and using their knowledge of difficult terrains to build a fortified base he again defeated the Danes at the Battle of Edington .
Alfred followed them to their castle at Chippenham. Fourteen long days later the Danes were brought in starving, maimed and afraid. This victory will undoubtedly play an important role not only in Wessex's survival, but in its movement to unite the world.
King Alfred regrouped the army in settlements all over southern England. Ready to stand firm against hungry, assertive raiders and attackers who continue to harass and divide Britannia 's shattered kingdom.
