Epic is taking firm steps forward in professional competitive Fortnite . The developer announced today that it will provide $100 million (!!!!!) to Fortnite prize pools for the 2018-2019 season. In a short blog post, Epic said it wants to create a more competitive environment for Fortnite to be "more inclusive" and focus on "the joy of playing and watching."
"We're approaching competitive play in a big way, but our approach will be different," Epic said. said. "We plan to be more inclusive and focus on the joy of playing and watching."
More details on the structure of tournaments and eligible platforms will be announced "in the coming weeks", so stay tuned.
According to eSports earnings (via CNBC), the $100 million prize is a really big deal, as Valve 's Dota 2 is more than double the $38 million total prize money received in 2017 from all of its tournaments in 2017. The International, Valve's massive Dota 2 event, paid out nearly $25 million for a single event last year, the largest prize pool in gaming history. For another point of comparison, the opening night Overwatch League tournament will pay out $3.5 million in total over the entire season.
