How did PUBG become successful in such a short time?

The game, which has been popular since the first day of its release, proved its success by placing in the third place among the best-selling discounted games during the Steam Summer Sale period, where games were sold in a scramble manner. Compared to other Battle Royal games, the game, which offers no features other than next-generation graphics, is currently selling 6 million copies to its developer. 

So, what could be the factor that makes PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds a phenomenon, even though it has limited content compared to other Battle Royal games? 

The game, which has handicaps in terms of price, has managed to attract even players who are far from this genre by breaking taboos. Even AAA games, which have already been implemented with large investments, are quickly mixed into the dusty pages of history due to today's game perception. However, competitive productions that have come to the fore in recent years both need small investments and can be mentioned for many years. We can show this situation as the reason why the well-established companies of the video game world such as Ubisoft, Blizzard and EA Games are now turning to competitive games. For this reason, the fact that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has a fully competitive structure was enough to easily stand out.


Personally, when I put PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and the video game world side by side, I see the game world as an incomplete puzzle and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds as the piece that completes this puzzle. The game, which impressed the players in a short time when it was released, managed to fill its own void in the video game world well. By opening a parenthesis here, I would like to say that Battle Royal, like MOBA, which has been included in the game world in the last 10 years, is now a game genre.

First of all, it is obvious that developer-related problems in productions such as DayZ, H1Z1, The Culling, Rust and Ark do not exist in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. The successful production, which came across the players with a new update every week, managed to make its rivals swallow in a short time in terms of sales. When it comes to playing the game, which is still struggling with optimization problems, players are willing to even go below 30 FPS. Although the game, whose attractiveness is increasing day by day, repeats itself, it can become quite enjoyable due to its game structure in terms of co-op. According to some experts, the production, in which 100 players parachute out of the plane and brutally kill each other, is very popular because of the human's subconscious survival instinct.


Secondly, I would like to draw your attention to the game's advertising campaigns and the success of its marketing strategies. The distributor of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which tries to localize the game in countries where competitive games are played a lot, promotes its games on a country basis quite successfully. While we can't even read the patch notes for Blizzard's or Ubisoft's competitive games in Turkish today, we can read PUBG's patch notes in Turkish. It is necessary to congratulate the BlueHole team, which has done a better job than the million-dollar companies of the video game world in matters such as special events for country players, services that explain the game in Turkish or customer support after sales. 

On the other hand, due to the genre of the game, it can easily come to the fore in channels such as YouTube or Twitch. For this reason, the advertisements of the production, which are constantly taken into consideration by the players through the publishers, are formed automatically.


When we come to the end, we can see PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds as a premium game of the Battle Royal genre. In addition to being supported for 10 years, the fact that it will be released on the console platform directly distinguishes itself from other Battle Royal games. In addition, we can understand how excited the developer team is for the game from the videos published next to the updates that come every week. You may think that the game with a price of 69 TL in Türkiye does not deserve this price.
